With requests it's like, who cares? Anything is better than nothing. Beggars can't be choosers. As soon as someone gives you something in exchange you're required to try and match that value.
Personally I also give commissioners the ability to make changes at various points in time, so not only is there the extra work of making alterations, there's also the back-and-forth communication which takes more time than you'd think.
I still like taking commissions though, it's an opportunity to put a lot more effort into a piece. But sometimes it's too much effort. I can churn out a polished picture in about 5 hours usually, but commissions can be 2-3x as long to finish.
