Junk the damage that Kanigher did and go back-to-basics.
Diana was made from clay but is a "normal" flesh and blood person who received such exceptional martial arts training from her Amazon family that she can do a bunch of physical feats that seem absurd, Shang Chi/Iron Fist/Wuxia style. If you do manage to shoot her, she obviously bleeds like a normal person, because she essentially is a normal person. She has some fancy magic and sci-fi gear to set her apart from generic martial artists.
She goes off on adventures to fight Evil, has some fun along the way but has a strong moral core. The Amazons are there as her supporting cast, along with Steve Trevor (an Air Force dude that's got some two-fisted pulp adventurer energy going for him, with a heart of gold), and Etta Candy (the head of her fan club, who documents her adventures).
Some supporting cast from later runs is fine - obviously the major named Amazons like Phillipus and Artemis, maybe Ferdinand as her chef, the Kapatelis family, and establish that she works out of the Themysciran embassy.
Keep the Adventures at about the level of Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones.
With Ares, mix myth with his Golden Age depiction. He's not EVIL, he doesn't want Armageddon, and he even has a soft spot for the Amazons because they WERE his chosen people once upon a time. Most people can't see him, but he invisibly encourages and helps people that are walking down the path of war. He figures war is the correct solution to conflict.
Some cheesecake and sex appeal is fine. Hell, throw in some beefcake too, be equal opportunity.
