Don't go to Australia; it's the worst place on Earth, in my opinion.
Move to New England for a nice mix of friendly people, industry, and natural beauty. Move to the Midwest if you don't need industry but value wide, open spaces. If you like it warm, Austin is pretty hip and is becoming more affluent every year as they sap Fortune 500 companies away from Silicon Valley. Charleston, SC is pretty nice if you want to be by the ocean and have a warm climate while enjoying 17-19th century charm and friendly folks. If you want the former but prefer more action, Miami might be for you. If you like Miami but don't fancy being shot, LA if you can afford the nice bits.
Places to avoid:
Any state that doesn't border an ocean, Gulf of Mexico, or Great Lake with the exception of the states west of the Dakotas and Colorado.
