The Vietnamese created a short animated series on the Trưng sisters and the 36 female Vietnamese generals who served under them who revolted against China's Eastern Han dynasty.

The Vietnamese DeeDee Animation studio in collaboration with TNN Entertainment made an animated series of shorts on the Trưng sisters and the 36 female Vietnamese generals who served under them who revolted against China's Eastern Han dynasty, to accompany a movie made about the Trưng sisters called Trưng Vương (English title is She Kings).

The Hai Bà Trưng or the Trưng sisters were two Vietnamese sisters who led a rebellion in 39 AD with 36 female Vietnamese generals against China in the Han dynasty. They were Trưng Trắc and her younger sister Trưng Nhị.

Among the 36 Vietnamese female generals were Phùng Thị Chính, Nàng Nội, Vũ Thị Thục, Nàng Chủ (Thánh Thiên), Phật Nguyệt, Lê Ngọc Trinh (Ả Chạ), Nguyễn Ngọc Thuyền, Bát Nàn, Hồ Đề, Nàng A (Quách A), Quý Lan, Đô Thiên, Hoàng Thiều Hoa, Trần Quốc, Sa Giang, Trần Năng, Trần Thị Phương Châu, Lê Thị Lan, Vương Thị Tiên, Vĩnh Huy, Đinh Tĩnh Nương, Đinh Bạch Nương, Đàm Ngọc Nga, Nàng Quế, Nàng Quỳnh, Nàng Xuân (Xuân Nương), Lê Chân, Nàng Hoa (Lê Thị Hoa), Trương Tử Nương, Tam Nương, Trần Thiếu Lan, Phương Dung, Bà Chúa Bầu, Ả Quán. Their armies combined were 80,000 and they also recruited women soldiers.

The Vietnamese account of the war says that the Vietnamese women rebelled due to oppression since the Chinese killed Trưng Trắc's husband and because some Chinese officials like the governor Tô Định wanted to take these Vietnamese women generals as concubines due to their beauty. Some of the female generals such as Lê Chân and Bát Nàn revolted to stop themselves from being forced into harem of the Chinese governor Tô Định and joined the Trưng sisters uprising. The Chinese governor also wanted the Vietnamese female general Phùng Thị Chính as a concubine.

The Chinese account of the war says that the Trung sisters Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị rebelled after the Chinese governor Tô Định curbed her with laws and says nothing about executing Trưng Trắc's husband or Tô Định wanting to take the Vietnamese female generals as concubines. The Chinese account calls Trưng Trắc a "fierce warrior" and says that Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị captured 65 cities from China and Trưng Trắc ruled as Queen for three years and the Chinese governors could only defend themselves and were unable to defeat her.

The Trưng sisters and the thirty six Vietnamese women generals successfully defeated the numerically superior Chinese armies within two months, capturing 65 cities, towns, forts and strongholds from the Chinese and retaking control over all of Vietnam. Chinese generals and Chinese soldiers were hacked to death or beheaded in battle during fighting by Vietnamese women or if the Chinese men were captured or surrendered they were beheaded in public executions by the Vietnamese female generals. The women showed no quarter or mercy to captured or surrendered Chinese men. Surrendered Chinese men were mass beheaded in public spectacles by Vietnamese women and their blood was smeared on flags and banners as sacrifices to the banners. The surviving Chinese colonists in areas not reached by the rebels yet in Vietnam fled back to China as they heard what was happening to their compatriots to avoid the same fate before the women reached their regions. Chinese blood overfilled rivers and battlefields as Vietnamese female generals and their armies hacked the Chinese men to pieces and cut them down brutally in combat with their swords, spears and arrows. Each female general personally amassed an impressive number of kills. They outwitted Chinese men in strategy and tactics and surrounded them in many battles so they could have no possibility of escape to China.

Chinese men in Vietnam were slaughtered and massacred all over their former strongholds which were taken by the Vietnamese female generals. In banner sacrifice rituals, the victim would be headed and the severed heads would be offered as a sacrifice to the banner and blood of the victim smeared on the banner itself. Sometimes the live victim's flesh on their body was cut and sliced to draw blood to smear on the banner before beheading, as a form of torture. The heads would be displayed hanging under or next to the blood stained banner.

The Trưng sisters and the thirty six Vietnamese women generals ruled an independent Vietnam for three years from 40-43 AD before the Chinese returned with an even larger army of 200,000 drawn of soldiers all across China, mobilizing supplies from all over China led by General Ma Yuan which outnumbered the Vietnamese army. According to the Vietnamese account, the Chinese had been humiliated with the scenes of Vietnamese women defeating, killing and beheading Chinese men and were determined to avenge the blow to restore their reputation, manhood and force those Vietnamese women into their harems.

The Trưng sisters at first defeated the numerically superior and better supplied Chinese army under Ma Yuan in his first attempt to reinvade Vietnam in 43 AD but Ma Yuan won the second battle when he tried again. This time the Chinese army was much too large and won the battles in their reconquest and after the defeat, the Trưng sisters committed suicide by drowning themselves in a river so they wouldn't be forced into harems. Some of the other 36 Vietnamese female generals like Phùng Thị Chính and Lê Chân escaped and hacked their way through Chinese soldiers with their swords and continued resisting killing more Chinese men for months and up to a year after the Trưng sisters deaths until they were cornered and also drowned themselves to avoid being forced into concubinage. Phùng Thị Chính gave birth to a baby (from her Vietnamese husband) and fought on the battlefield with the baby in one hand or strapped to her back and her sword in the other, hacking Chinese soldiers to death as she broke out.

There is also a Vietnamese version of the story that Ma Yuan won the second battle only because he ordered the Chinese soldiers to strip completely naked to shock the Vietnamese women and this caused many Vietnamese to disperse and leave the battlefield. The Chinese sought to take the Trưng sisters and their female generals as concubines and told their soldiers to catch them alive if they could so they could marry and bed them. The Trưng sisters still managed to hack their way out killing and beheading naked Chinese soldiers to escape and reach the river to drown themselves so they couldn't be taken as concubines. Lê Chân preserved her virginity by drowning herself and Phùng Thị Chính also drowned herself since the Chinese governor also wanted her as a concubine.

Chinese records just say that Ma Yuan defeated the Trưng sisters in the reinvasion and either killed them in battle or executed them. Chinese records do not mention Chinese soldiers or officers wanting to take the Trưng sisters and their 36 female generals as concubines or of them committing suicide.

Over 200 years later, according to Vietnamese accounts another Vietnamese woman, Bà Triệu or Lady Triệu led a rebellion against the Chinese in 248 killing Chinese men. She was said to be a very tall woman with huge breasts and defeated the Chinese in almost 30 battles. The Chinese allegedly stripped nude to fight her again. Even after her death her memory psychologically terrified the Chinese. The Chinese general was plagued with nightmares by her that so ordered wooden penises be carved and used as charms to ward her spirit off.

Chinese accounts mention a Vietnamese rebellion in 248 but do not mention the identities, names, or gender of the leaders. Lady Triệu is not mentioned by name in Chinese records.

Today the Trưng sisters and the thirty six Vietnamese women generals are worshiped as goddesses in their hometowns with temples and statues erected to them and streets named after them.

They then captured 65 cities and citadels across Vietnam after defeating the Chinese armies. The Trưng sisters became queens of an independent Vietnam for three years after driving the Chinese out.

Vietnamese female general Phùng Thị Chính fought her battles with her baby in one hand and a sword in the other killing Chinese soldiers with it. Another Vietnamese female general Phật Nguyệt was said to have caused the most terror to Chinese soldiers. All of the Chinese soldiers were male.

The Han dynasty sent Ma Yuan to reconquer Vietnam. Vietnamese traditions say the all Chinese male army commanded by General Ma Yuan stripped completely naked to fight the Vietnamese females of the Trưng sisters. Ma Yuan allegedly told his soldiers that whoever could capture the Trưng sisters alive could take them as their wives.

The original Vietnamese story says the Chinese men were completely stark naked from head to toe with everything exposed and did not only take their pants off. It then narrates that the Trưng sisters and their female generals fought the naked men before committing suicide. Vietnam's Ministry of Education is toning down the story here by making it only pants off.

(Lưu Ứng Khâm is the Vietnamese pronunciation of his name but he was Chinese.)

The Vietnamese account also says the Chinese general Lưu Ứng Khâm and soldiers were asleep in the boats when Vietnamese female general Ả Chạ (Lê Ngọc Trinh) and her troops ambushed them.

Lê Ngọc Trinh revolted since a Chinese wanted to make her his concubine.

A Chinese tried to make Vietnamese woman general Lê Chân into his concubine. She refused and revolted, joining the Trưng sisters and founded the city of Hải Phòng, defeating the Chinese in many land and naval battles. She continued fighting the Chinese a year after the Trưng sisters deaths.

Thánh Thiên prepared her army and female generals, pretending to negotiate with Chinese general Tô Định sending him a message if he could wait a day or two before deciding to surrender. The Chinese then started feasting and drinking wine while waiting her to arrive and surrender until they grew tired. Thánh Thiên delayed the arrival, arriving late with her army to ambush the defenseless Chinese on all sides. The Vietnamese female generals killed and slaughtered Chinese soldiers and defeated them. Mã Giang Long was beaten since his army was defenseless and tired. Mã Giang Long yelled at people to get out of the way for Tô Định to retreat. Nguyễn Ngọc Thuyền then showed up on a horse next to him and swung her sword down at him. Her beautiful and terrifying fierce appearance frightened him. Ma blocked the sword shouting "are you a divine tigress?" She answered that she was Ngọc Thuyền and she was going to get his blood on her sword and yelled "look here". Her sword flashed and Mã Giang Long's sword fell to the ground. Ma hurriedly drew his sword from the side but the sword was not out of it's sheath when his head fell on the horse's foot when she cut him.

The female Vietnamese generals of Thánh Thiên then slayed and killed the Chinese soldiers like splitting bamboos, cornering them on the Nhật Đức river. The battle on the river took place at dawn and blood filled the river as Chinese soldiers were hacked to death and beheaded.

Vietnamese female general Nàng Nội killed Chinese general Hoàng Sùng Chính by beheading him in an ambush.

Chinese soldiers called the Vietnamese female general Nàng Nội the "white crane goddess" and she rode a black horse waering a yếm (bodice undergarment or camisole). She ambushed and defeated Chinese soldiers in Gò Mai and Bạch Hạc killing many Chinese soldiers and captain when attacking their camps. Tô Định sent Chinese general Hoàng Sùng Chính to fight her. Hoàng Sùng Chính mocked the female generals and everything was quiet after he came. Hoàng said they were afraid of him and then let his troops withdraw, he was at a river wharf drinking wine to celebrate when arrows were shot at him and horses rushed. Nàng Nội charged on a black horse first striking at Hoàng's sword and then a second strike of her sword beheaded Hoàng causing the two pieces of his body to fall at the horse's feet. She terrified and defeated the Chinese.

Vietnamese female general Trần Nang and another Vietnamese female Ả Lúa were attacked by Chinese cavalry which encircled and stormed their camp. Trần Nang and Ả Lúa fought on horseback and hacked a bloody path out of the encirclement but then stopped, with Trần Nang saying they should turn back and fight. The Chinese cavalry then caught up with them. Trần Nang told Ả Lúa that they should terrify the Chinese and let them know the reputation of Vietnamese women by killing Chinese soldiers and beheading Chinese generals. The two Vietnamese women slaughtered the Chinese and their bodies fell under their horses hooves and the rest ran away. The two Vietnamese girls were soaked in Chinese blood. The next day they continued fighting on the ground when their horses could not get up. One Chinese general said that he fought hundreds of battles but never met a general who was as brave as the two Vietnamese girls. He called on them to surrender to be treated well. Lúa then lifted her sword and started forward and the Chinese general fell down from his horse. The Chinese rushed in but then a thunder and rain storm happened and the Chinese withdrew. Vietnamese female general Nàng Quốc led a force of soldiers to defeat the Chinese in a naval battle while the other Vietnamese female generals Lê Chân, Bát Nạn were winning and Nàng Nội beheaded the Chinese general. Nàng Quốc then led her army to sweep Chinese camps along the Red river.

The Trưng sisters and their 36 female generals raised the 80,000 army and defeated the Chinese, overthrowing Chinese rule amd establishing an independent Vietnam these women ruled for three years. Tge 36 female generals also had more female officers serving under them who commanded only a few hundred or thousand each.

They ambushed, massacred, defeated and executed far larger Chinese armies, navies and garrisons which outnumbered them during the revolt capturing 65 cities, towns, villages and citadels from Han Chinese control. Han Chinese men were mass beheaded by Vietnamese female generals. Their blood was used to color flags. It was probably the largest event where men were slaughtered and mass beheaded by females. Chinese men's heads became ornaments all over their villages and strongholds. The Vietnamese female generals were mostly civilian villagers before the rebellion.

Vietnamese female general Nàng Quốc had like only 100 to 200 soldiers under her personal command to defeat Chinese armies.

The Chinese Eastern Han dynasty Guangwu emperor had to mobilise a large army with soldiers from across China under Mã Viện (Ma Yuan) and mobilise supplies and food across China after those three years to reinvade Vietnam and according to the Vietnamese account they had to use the stripping naked trick to succeed and still suffered heavy casualties when the Trưng sisters committed suicide. This army outnumbered the Trưng sisters army and had far more supplies, food and weapons. Some of the 36 female generals like Phùng Thị Chính and Lê Chân continued fighting the Chinese for a year after the Trưng sisters died and inflict heavy casualties hacking their way through Chinese men with their swords.

The Vietnamese female generals and sisters are worshiped as goddesses in temples in their home villages and regions and there are streets named after them. The accounts of them beheading and killing Chinese were passed down from Vietnamese in those villages.

Beheading captives to a flag in sacrificial religious ceremonies originated in East Asia as a military ritual in the Han dynasty in China and in Vietnam during Chinese rule. Both Chinese and non-Chinese peoples in East Asia and Vietnam practiced it with Chinese and Vietnamese doing it. The difference here is that women were mass executing men. Almost every Chinese male in Vietnam had his head harvested by the Trưng sisters and their Vietnamese female generals except for some Chinese colonists who got terrified after hearing about the mass executions of Chinese by the female generals in neighboring districts and fled back to China before their districts were taken by the women and governor Tô Định who managed to escape to China after his generals were beheaded.

In banner sacrifice rituals, the victim would be beheaded and the severed heads would be offered as a sacrifice to the banner and blood of the victim smeared on the banner itself. Sometimes the live victim's flesh was cut and sliced to draw blood to smear on the banner before the beheading. The heads would be displayed hanging under or next to the blood stained banner.

The Chinese account of the war says some things differently. It says after the Chinese defeated the Vietnamese army in their reinvasion, they captured and executed the Trưng sisters instead of them committing suicide and says nothing about using naked soldiers. The overall narrative is the same with the Trưng sisters successfully revolting for three years and capturing 65 cities.

Emperor Guangwu therefore ordered the Changsha, Hepu, and Jiaozhi Commanderies to prepare wagons and boats, to repair the roads and bridges, to open the mountain passes, and to save food supplies. In the 18th year 42, he sent Ma Yuan the General Fubo and Duan Zhi (段志) the General Lochuan to lead ten odd thousands of men from Changsha, Guiyang, Linling, and Cangwu Commanderies against them. In the summer of the next year 43, Ma recaptured Jiaozhi and killed Zhēng Cè, Zhēng Èr, and others in battle, and the rest scattered. He also attacked Du Yang (都陽), a rebel of the Jiuzhen Commandery, and Du surrendered and was moved, along with some 300 of his followers to Lingling Commandery. Phùng Thị Chính killed over a dozen Chinese men with her sword and hacked her way through their lines to escape when they surrounded her before rejoining the Trưng sisters. Because the Chinese general wanted to take Phùng as his wife, Phùng then killed herself by jumping into the river following what the Trưng sisters did. He also wanted Lê Chân as a wife.

Another Vietnamese woman named Lady Triệu led a rebellion against the Chinese Wu dynasty centuries after the Trưng sisters rebellion. She was said in legend to be nine feet tall and have giant breasts three feet long. The Chinese men used the same tactic of stripping naked and going into battle with their naked dirty bodies against her so she fled in disgust because she hated dirtiness. Another reason she fled was that she was outnumbered and running out of soldiers so she could not take a Chinese fortress. She committed suicide after this by jumping into a river. This is the Vietnamese account. Unlike the Trưng sisters who were mentioned in Chinese records, the Chinese never mentioned Lady Triệu or a woman by name, only mentioning there was a rebellion in Vietnam during the Wu dynasty that was defeated.

The Chinese Wu dynasty was the Sun Wu state during the Three Kingdoms period of China.

The Chinese general also had wooden models of Chinese penises carved to guard against her spirit.

According to legend, Ba Trieu was nine feet tall, with three foot long breasts which she tied back over her shoulders when fighting. She was beautiful, and had a voice like ringing bells. In battle, she lead her armies from the top of an elephant, dressed with ivory shoes and golden hairpins. She struck fear into the hearts of her Chinese enemies, and she and her army won over 30 battles.

>Unfortunately, Ba Trieu's army was severely underfunded, and possessed no siege equipment. When they came to a Chinese fortress, they had to wait on the Chinese to come out and meet them. Ba Trieu also had an enormous weakness--she was very fastidious, and couldn't stand the sight of filth. One Chinese took advantage of this, and sent his army of men running out of the fortress naked, kicking up dirt and grime. Ba Trieu left the battlefield, and her army panicked, leading to a massive defeat. Rather than let her enemies capture her, Ba Trieu committed suicide by throwing herself into a river. She was only 23.

She haunted the Chinese general who defeated her, and spread an illness among the Chinese soldiers that could only be warded off by hanging wooden penises over the doorways of rooms one wished to occupy.

>After her death, a temple - known today as Nghe Temple - was built to honour her in Ma region by the people of An Bien. It took only one night to set the statue up; it was inaugurated on 31st December 2000, ushering in the first day of 21st century.

As rulers, they abolished the Chinese tax, and tried to restore traditional Vietnamese values to their kingdom. According to one source, the Trung sisters established a nation and their own queenship “as easily as their turning over their hands.” Their rebellion awakened in the Vietnamese a spirit of independence and a wish to fight for their own land, for their own country.

At this point, her followers, believing a woman couldn’t be victorious in battle, scattered and their rule ended. Another, more amusing tale, claims that the Chinese soldiers took off their clothes and the Trung army, mostly made up of women, were so embarrassed they fled! If this is true, the Chinese truly had ingenious war tactics!

>Either way, it was at this battle that the Trung sisters were defeated and sadly killed. There are various stories as to how they died: some say Ma Yuan killed them in battle or decapitated them afterwards, some report that they drowned themselves in the river to avoid capture, and one legendary account suggests that they vanished into the sky! Nonetheless, the abundance of celebrated female rebels in Vietnam is indicative at least of their importance in the story of Vietnamese independence.

There's an entire history of Vietnamese women humiliating, torturing and killing Chinese men stretching back 2,000 years. Vietnam's national heroes are the Trưng sisters and their 36 female generals. They had many female soldiers too and revolted against Han China. They defeated the numerically superior Chinese, capturing 65 cities and strongholds. Captured Chinese men, soldiers and Chinese male generals were executed and beheaded by the Vietnamese female generals some of whom were teens and their rebel armies. Every single Chinese male in Vietnam was either beheaded in executions and battles or ran back to China.

It was a scene of massive humiliation for China as Chinese male generals were captured and beheaded by Vietnamese women generals and their blood smeared on flags in sacrifice-executions. Chinese men's heads decorated the headquarters of Viet female generals and their blood stained their flags.

After the Trưng sisters and their 36 female generals ruled Vietnam for three years from 40 to 43 CE (AD), the Chinese returned to reconquer Vietnam with a much larger army from all across China which outnumbered the Vietnamese.

The Trưng sisters and the 36 female generals are still worshipped today as deities in temples in their hometowns.

Another Vietnamese woman Lady Triệu led another rebellion against China.

Vietnamese women are producing a film and animated shorts about the Trưng sisters and some of their teen female generals showing them killing Chinese men by beheading and other means. They completed three shorts out of seven planned animated shorts and are working on the movie.

The Chinese armies in Vietnam were all male. Several of the Vietnamese female generals of the Trưng sisters rebelled 2,000 years ago because the Chinese governor wanted them as concubines like generals Bát Nàn and Lê Chân. These women then rebelled so they wouldn't be concubines and hacked Chinese men to pieces or beheaded them. Chinese men were massacred and slaughtered by Viet women in 65 strongholds after being defeated and surrounded by them. The Vietnamese women led the war from the front and started it.

The territory of Au Lac was comprised in 3 districts of Chiao Chih province, each ruled by a Chinese mandarin while the old system of lower rank rulers of Lac Hau , Lac Tuong were kept unchanged.Viet people had to pay tributes and many kind of taxes to the Hans. The Chinese mandarins tried to occupy the area of land and changed them into Chinese farms with Chinese peasants immigrated. But the imposition of a foreign administrative system and the Sinicization was not easy, numerous sporadic uprisings and rebellions are testimony to Viet strong resistance. In 40 AD, a rebellion of Trung Sisters (Trung Trac and Trung Nhi) took place and swept out the Han. Trung Trac became the Queen of the Independent Viet. The Capital was in Me Linh (now Phu Tho). But the State of Trung could'nt last very long, in 41AD, the Han sent their 200,000 soldiers troop to re-invade and after two years of brave resistance,the Trung Sisters were defeated in 43 AD.

Mẫu Sơn in the battle of Lạng Sơn, Móng Cái in Quảng Ninh province in the Battle of Mong Cai and the battle of Minh Tâm in Minh Tâm commune, Nguyên Bình district of Cao Bằng province. Vietnamese women made up one third of the prison guards at the prison where Chinese were held captive in the 1979 war, nicknamed "Beijing Hotel" after the "Hanoi Hilton".

This is a Chinese soldier wearing "the Grenade for Glory" around his neck during the border conflict with Vietnam in the 1980s after the 1979. The grenade was for killing himself to avoid torture because captured Chinese would be heavily tortured by Vietnamese female militia and their body parts would be collected as trophies. Chinese soldiers were a large source of male skulls and bones used by Vietnamese medical students in their practical classes in medical schools of the border provinces.

He also has no muscles at all.

Vietnamese militia women of Minh Tâm commune with the 202 captured Chinese soldiers.

This is an image of the 202 captured Chinese from the 448th regiment after the battle of Minh Tâm where they were ambushed and 340 Chinese males hunted down and killed by Minh Tâm militia including Vietnamese female militia on 13 March 1979. The Chinese were taken to the "Hotel Beijing" or "Beijing Hotel" prison where they were tortured by the Vietnamese guards which were one third female. The Minh Tâm female militia already killed many Chinese when defending during the early weeks of the war and captured guns, mortars and ammunition.

The Chinese tried to deny the battle happened and that it pulled out all Chinese soldiers safely. The Vietnamese showed the pictures of Vietnamese women capturing the 448th regiment and confirmed the Chinese soldier's identities.

The Minh Tâm militia were awarded the Military Exploit Order (Huân chương quân công) and later were awarded Hero of the People's Armed Forces or People's Armed Force Hero (Anh hùng lực lượng vũ trang nhân dân) on 20 December 1979.

Vietnamese female militia of Hoàng Tung commune of Hoà An district, Cao Bằng province were awarded the same awards. They were 54 women and they killed many Chinese males and captured 20 Chinese males alive over the war including 4 officers.

Accounts of veterans of Vietnamese all female militia units who fought in 1979 against Chinese. The women are in their fifties or sixties now.

All female Vietnamese militia unit C3 - 103 of the Logistics Department of Military Region in Hòa An distrct, Cao Bằng province which fought against the Chinese on 17 February to 5 March 1979.

There were 93 Vietnamese teenage girls and women in this unit and they served as logistics before taking up arms to fight as a militia unit against Chinese men. They were led by Vũ Thị Kim Liên a 19 year old woman and they killed dozens of Chinese men in battle. 19 year old Lieutenant colonel Nguyễn Thị Tuyết was also part of the unit.

The Vietnamese female militia of C3 defeated Chinese teenage boys and men several times in battle repulsing them each time with dozens of deaths and each of them had to bury four Chinese male corpses as they took captured Chinese weapons from the field to use themselves. The first battle lasted 2 hours.

Several Chinese units were destroyed and captured by Vietnamese female fighters. 27 Chinese were taken prisoner from 17 February to 6 March during regular battles. 9 Vietnamese women from the Tân An girl squad led by Hứa Tú Phượng and Trương Thị Đức Hà killed 200-300 Chinese and captured 2 Chinese alive with 50 guns. Other Vietnamese female fighters in the squad were Nông Sà Lầy, Lương Thị Ty, Khăm Thị Đào, Khăm Thị Hòa and Hứa Tú Hòa. Another Vietnamese female squad captured 7 Chinese from the 41st and 42nd Army corps on 26 February in Cao Bằng. They were captured when several Chinese tanks were hit and disabled by the Vietnamese female militia with mines and anti tank weapons. The Chinese assumed the tank crew were dead so they moved on. The Chinese tank crews were only trapped with their tank hatches damaged and unable to open. Vietnamese female militia opened the tanks and extracted the Chinese. Each of these Vietnamese militia squads only captured only 2 to 7 prisoners over the main course of the war because of an informal quota. Any Chinese taken prisoner above that number were executed. Vietnamese women manning anti aircraft artillery, mortars and snipers took a heavy toll on the Chinese. Three Vietnamese women with one antiaircraft gun killed ten soldiers.

Hứa Tú Phượng personally executed a Chinese officer by shooting him and Nông Sà Lầy killed dozens of Chinese with her machine gun. Their exploits were described in newspaper and radio broadcasts along with their images and information.

One of the members of the Vietnamese Tân An girl squad here was a teacher.

The Vietnamese won the last battle of the war, battle of Minh Tâm. The Chinese announced the withdrawal on 6 March after capturing Cao Bằng and Lạng Sơn. The Chinese declared all soldiers withdrawn by 11 March. However one Chinese regiment was left stranded in the withdrawal and the Vietnamese noticed. On 11-19 March Vietnamese volunteer militia women of Minh Tâm commune ambushed the Chinese 448th regiment, 150th division, 50th army. 542 Chinese were ambushed. 202 Chinese were captured alive by the Minh Tâm militia on 19 March. The rest of the missing Chinese were hunted down by the Vietnamese female militia, tortured and killed. The Minh Tâm female militia later received an award that year for their victory.
The Chinese were blindfolded, and were tied with metal wire to the backs of trucks drove them to a prison nicknamed Hotel Beijing. One third of the Vietnamese prison guards there were women and these female soldiers guarded the Chinese prisoners.

239 Chinese in total were officially taken as POWs in the official prison. Some militia probably took more prisoners and disposed of them. The Chinese were tortured by the Vietnamese guards. Their wounds were operated on without anesthesia and the guards would beat their abdomens, chests and genitals with bayonets, rifle butts, metal bars or kick them. One Chinese soldier, Guo Qingfu died under torture by his guards and his body was kept in Vietnam. Vietnam returned a death certificate to China instead. Chinese platoon leader Su Shuibao was kicked and beaten on his genitals for hours until his testicles ruptured. Some ended up permanently disabled, lost their hearing, constantly blacked out.

The Chinese were forced to pose with Vietnamese female militia holding guns to them for journalists to take photos. Some of these photos were blown up into posters and appeared on street signs and in factories in Vietnam.

Way more than 239 Chinese men were taken prisoner over the course of the war but 239 is the number of Chinese prisoners in official custody at the official prisoner of war camp "Beijing Hotel" (Bắc Kinh phạn điếm) who survived at the end the war. The other thousands of Chinese men who were captured were killed and tortured to death during the war by Vietnamese militia since they couldn't hold too many Chinese prisoners while defending their positions. Due to Guo Qingfu's death in official custody at the "Beijing hotel" it came down to 238.

This is a report on Tân An girl squad.

Vietnamese female soldiers usually fought to the death or retreated in good order after inflicting massive casualties on Chinese soldiers. The Tân An girl squad and other Vietnamese female units in Cao Bằng retreated after several days when the number of attacks became too overwhelming, choosing which few Chinese prisoners to keep alive and bring with them .

Vietnam broadcasted accounts of female units like the Tân An girl squad on radio including their kill and capture counts and in the newspapers. Pictures of Chinese men with their hands tied up held at gunpoint by Vietnamese female militia were released to foreign and western press agencies during the war to humiliate China and show they were being beaten by women. These were released to western newspapers the day after they were taken in February via wire when the war was still going on.

The pictures of the Chinese prisoners captured by female Vietnamese militia were also blown up in size and put in public in some cities at the time.

Vietnamese militia women from an all female unit in Móng Cái in Quảng Ninh province defending trenches during the Battle of Mong Cai from 16 February and 10 March 1979. The Vietnamese female militia units won the battle decisively, killing 750 Chinese and capturing Chinese infiltrators and saboteurs in the province after repelling all attacks. At one peak in Cao Ba Lanh a Vietnamese platoon killed 360 Chinese from a single regiment. This was the second to last battle before the battle of Minh Tâm in Cao Bằng where another Vietnamese female militia unit killed and captured hundreds of Chinese. Teenage Chinese boy conscripts with no previous experience in war were easily picked off by Vietnamese female militias familiar with the terrain.

The Vietnamese used all female militia units during the war against China because most Vietnamese men in the regular army were fighting in Cambodia at the same time. The Hai Bà Trưng or the Trưng sisters were two Vietnamese sisters who led a rebellion in 39 AD with 36 female Vietnamese generals against China in the Han dynasty. They were Trưng Trắc and her younger sister Trưng Nhị.

Among the 36 Vietnamese female generals were Phùng Thị Chính, Nàng Nội, Vũ Thị Thục, Nàng Chủ (Thánh Thiên), Phật Nguyệt, Lê Ngọc Trinh (Ả Chạ), Nguyễn Ngọc Thuyền, Bát Nàn, Hồ Đề, Nàng A (Quách A), Quý Lan, Đô Thiên, Hoàng Thiều Hoa, Trần Quốc, Sa Giang, Trần Năng, Trần Thị Phương Châu, Lê Thị Lan, Vương Thị Tiên, Vĩnh Huy, Đinh Tĩnh Nương, Đinh Bạch Nương, Đàm Ngọc Nga, Nàng Quế, Nàng Quỳnh, Nàng Xuân (Xuân Nương), Lê Chân, Nàng Hoa (Lê Thị Hoa), Trương Tử Nương, Tam Nương, Trần Thiếu Lan, Phương Dung, Bà Chúa Bầu, Ả Quán. Their armies combined were 80,000 and they also recruited women soldiers.

The Vietnamese account of the war says that the Vietnamese women rebelled due to oppression since the Chinese killed Trưng Trắc's husband Thi Sách and because some Chinese officials like the governor Tô Định wanted to take these Vietnamese women generals as concubines due to their beauty. Some of the female generals such as Lê Chân and Bát Nàn revolted to stop themselves from being forced into harem of the Chinese governor Tô Định and joined the Trưng sisters uprising. The Chinese governor also wanted the Vietnamese female general Phùng Thị Chính as a concubine. Chinese governor Tô Định and his army were collecting and forcing beautiful Vietnamese women into his harem for his sexual pleasure, raising taxes and forcing more work on Vietnamese. Tô Định was reportedly furious that a beautiful Vietnamese woman like Trưng Trắc was marrying Thi Sách since he demanded all beautiful Vietnamese women as his own concubines so he executed Thi Sách and was surprised at how he did not know beautiful Vietnamese women like Trưng Trắc were still not yet in his harem.

The Chinese account of the war says that the Trung sisters Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị rebelled after the Chinese governor Tô Định curbed her with laws and says nothing about executing Trưng Trắc's husband Thi Sách or Tô Định wanting to take the Vietnamese female generals as concubines. The Chinese account calls Trưng Trắc a "fierce warrior" and says that Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị captured 65 cities from China and Trưng Trắc ruled as Queen for three years and the Chinese governors could only defend themselves and were unable to defeat her.

The Trưng sisters and the thirty six Vietnamese women generals successfully defeated the numerically superior Chinese armies within two months, capturing 65 cities, towns, forts and strongholds from the Chinese and retaking control over all of Vietnam. Chinese generals and Chinese soldiers were hacked to death or beheaded in battle during fighting by Vietnamese women or if the Chinese men were captured or surrendered they were beheaded in public executions by the Vietnamese female generals. The women showed no quarter or mercy to captured or surrendered Chinese. Surrendered Chinese men were mass beheaded in public spectacles by Vietnamese women and their blood was smeared on flags and banners as sacrifices to the banners. The surviving Chinese colonists in areas not reached by the rebels yet in Vietnam fled back to China as they heard what was happening to their compatriots to avoid the same fate before the women reached their regions. Chinese blood overfilled rivers and battlefields as Vietnamese female generals and their armies hacked the Chinese to pieces and cut them down brutally in combat with their swords, spears and arrows. Each female general personally amassed an impressive number of kills. They outwitted Chinese men in strategy and tactics and surrounded them in many battles so they could have no possibility of escape to China.

Chinese men in Vietnam were slaughtered and massacred all over their former strongholds which were taken by the Vietnamese female generals. Instead of Chinese men continuing to collect Vietnamese women into their harems, Vietnamese women collected the severed heads of Chinese men as trophies after beheading them or slicing and hacking them alive into multiple pieces and used their blood as dye.

Trưng Trắc and some of the 36 Vietnamese female generals like Thánh Thiên were said to be so beautiful and stunning that Chinese men stopped in their tracks at the sight of them as they stared and wondered if they were spirits or goddesses as the women killed them.

Beheading captives to a flag in sacrificial religious ceremonies originated in East Asia as a military ritual in the Han dynasty in China and in Vietnam during Chinese rule. Both Chinese and non-Chinese peoples in East Asia and Vietnam practiced it with Chinese and Vietnamese doing it. The difference here is that women were mass executing men. Almost every Chinese male in Vietnam had his head harvested by the Trưng sisters and their Vietnamese female generals except for some Chinese colonists who got terrified after hearing about the mass executions of Chinese by the female generals in neighboring districts and fled back to China before their districts were taken by the women and according to one Vietnamese account the Chinese governor Tô Định who managed to escape in disguise to China after his generals were beheaded.

According to another Vietnamese account, the Trưng sisters and Tô Dinh confronted each other and the Trưng sisters warned him to flee back to China if he wanted to save his life otherwise they would take revenge if he stayed in Vietnam and feed his body to the vultures or fishes. They insulted and goaded him accusing him of being used to bragging and insulted him. Tô Dinh was furious and charged at them on his horse while the Trưng sisters got their gold encrusted axes together and the Vietnamese and Chinese armies struck each other. Chinese governor Tô Dinh fought the two sisters alone trying to prove his courage. The two sisters rushed to the right and left striking hard blows at Tô Dinh. The Chinese soldiers were seized with panic and fled. Tô Dinh, was terrified and sought to retreat with his army to take refuge in his camp. The Trưng sisters chased him in their fury for revenge as they burned the Chinese forts and camps and the Chinese army was in a total debacle. Tô Dinh was surrounded and tried to defend himself with his weapon but the Trưng sisters raised their golden axes and struck him repeatedly like hungry tigresses. The bravest dared not look them in the face as they finished it in the blink of an eye as they hacked him to death and then beheaded him. The Trưng sisters brandished the severed head of Chinese governor Tô Dinh in their hands. The humiliated Chinese army hastened to lower their weapons and to flee like deer trying to escape from the nets. Although their corpses remained in Vietnam it was as if their souls fled back to China. The humiliated Chinese governor ended up with his head as a decoration and trophy of the beautiful Vietnamese women he sought to collect as trophies in his harem and his headless chopped up body became animal food.

In banner sacrifice rituals, the victim would be headed and the severed heads would be offered as a sacrifice to the banner and blood of the victim smeared on the banner itself. Sometimes the victim's flesh was cut and sliced to draw blood to smear on the banner before beheading. The heads would be displayed hanging under or next to the blood stained banner.

The Trưng sisters and the thirty six Vietnamese women generals ruled an independent Vietnam for three years from 40-43 AD before the Chinese returned with an even larger army drawn of soldiers all across China, mobilizing supplies from all over China led by General Ma Yuan which outnumbered the Vietnamese army. According to the Vietnamese account, the Chinese had been humiliated with the scenes of Vietnamese women defeating, killing and beheading Chinese men and were determined to avenge the blow to restore their reputation, manhood and force those Vietnamese women into their harems.

The Trưng sisters at first defeated the numerically superior and better supplied Chinese army under Ma Yuan in his first attempt to reinvade Vietnam in 43 AD but Ma Yuan won the second battle when he tried again. This time the Chinese army was much too large and won the battles in their reconquest and after the defeat, the Trưng sisters committed suicide by drowning themselves in a river so they wouldn't be forced into harems. Some of the other 36 Vietnamese female generals like Phùng Thị Chính and Lê Chân escaped and hacked their way through Chinese soldiers with their swords and continued resisting killing more Chinese men for months and up to a year after the Trưng sisters deaths until they were cornered and also drowned themselves to avoid being forced into concubinage. Phùng Thị Chính gave birth to a baby (from her Vietnamese husband) and fought on the battlefield with the baby in one hand or strapped to her back and her sword in the other, hacking Chinese soldiers to death as she broke out.

There is also a Vietnamese version of the story that Ma Yuan won the second battle only because he ordered the Chinese soldiers to strip completely naked to shock the Vietnamese women and this caused many Vietnamese to disperse and leave the battlefield. The Chinese sought to take the Trưng sisters and their female generals as concubines and told their soldiers to catch them alive if they could so they could marry and bed them. The Trưng sisters still managed to hack their way out killing and beheading naked Chinese soldiers to escape and reach the river to drown themselves so they couldn't be taken as concubines. Lê Chân preserved her virginity by drowning herself and Phùng Thị Chính also drowned herself since the Chinese governor also wanted her as a concubine.

Chinese records just say that Ma Yuan defeated the Trưng sisters in the reinvasion and either killed them in battle or executed them. Chinese records do not mention Chinese soldiers or officers wanting to take the Trưng sisters and their 36 female generals as concubines or of them committing suicide.

Over 200 years later, according to Vietnamese accounts another Vietnamese woman, Bà Triệu or Lady Triệu led a rebellion against the Chinese in 248 killing Chinese men. She was said to be a very tall woman with huge breasts and defeated the Chinese in almost 30 battles. The Chinese allegedly stripped nude to fight her again. Even after her death her memory psychologically terrified the Chinese. The Chinese general was plagued with nightmares by her that so ordered wooden penises be carved and used as charms to ward her spirit off.

Chinese accounts mention a Vietnamese rebellion in 248 but do not mention the identities, names, or gender of the leaders. Lady Triệu is not mentioned by name in Chinese records.

Today the Trưng sisters and the thirty six Vietnamese women generals are worshiped as goddesses in their hometowns with temples and statues erected to them and streets named after them.
