The default software suite is a blessing and a curse. Sometimes it's nice not to have ridiculous amounts of options shoved in your face, other times, there's one small functionality about the window manager or whatever that you want to change, and usually these can be changed in a config file somewhere, but there's no gui settings panel for a lot of it.
As far as the devs asking for money, they half-apologized for it a week later and made it a little more obvious on their site that you can enter $0. It does still default to $10, however.
Definitely my *buntu of choice for the moment simply because it's pretty easy to get it to look good while maintaining functionality. Might switch to arch, or even *bsd once it supports steam without wine.
