I was denied opportunities when I was young. I was unable to find crack or heroin so I turned to steady employment to fill in the hours. First it was just a few hours a week. Then a few hours a day. I knew it was getting serious when I started spending forty hours a week doing it. I kept telling myself each time that it was the last time, but the lure of continuing to survive was irresistible. Of course you know the rest - I lost friends, started skipping out on activities I enjoyed just so I could continue being on a payroll. People on the street started to avoid me. You could see my shaven face and clean clothes a mile away.
Please forgive me.
