I'm into shortwave listening, not really ham radio.

I like tuning into different international broadcasters though, it's a huge hobby of mine.

My father is into it. Him being a retired electronic engineer helps (pic related).

It seems funs & involve a lot of technical knowledge. Can be interesting to improve/create radio devices & such things. Also a big community of passionate around ham radio, lot of congress, expos, technical revues ...

Ham radio is fucking stupid. All you do is make contact with neckbeards. Jot down their contact # and move on to the next one. Get yourself a baofeng uV5r a longer antenna and you'll be good for emergencies. Other than emergencies it's fucking retarded

Ham radio itself is fun but depending on what you plan to do / learn will determine equipment costs.

I started off just listening in and very rarely transmitting so i had a very cheap setup. PC was my transmitter and had a small antenna plugged in.

Later on i got into pirate radio and intercepting encrypted frequencies. that got pretty fun but quit that shit as soon as i got lazy with encrypting my shit.

all in all. it can be fun but ultimately the internet replaced HAM radio.
